University of South Carolina Office and Training Facility
The University of South Carolina office and training facility project undertaken by Kirk Commercial Construction (KCC) stands out as one of our most complex and unique endeavors. The project involved the transformation of an old church located on Pickens St into the Children's Law building, as envisioned by the university. The project's initial phase commenced with a complete interior demolition of the existing space, clearing the way for the implementation of new structural elements. KCC installed new steel columns, beams, bearing plates, railings, new elevator, a stairwell, and a stair nosing, allowing convenient access from the lower level to the main floor. This structural work formed the foundation for the subsequent stages of the project. KCC installed new metal studs, drywall, wall insulation, and ceilings, providing a solid framework for the interior space. The construction team also incorporated new doors, framing, trim, and acoustic grid/ceiling, contributing to the facility's functionality and aesthetics. Attention to detail was crucial, ensuring a cohesive and visually appealing environment.
In terms of flooring, KCC laid new flooring throughout the facility, with custom tile used in the restrooms. The existing wood flooring on the main level was refinished, preserving its original charm while enhancing its durability and appearance.
Standard operations, such as the installation of a new HVAC system, fire alarms, and visual screens, were conducted to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for occupants. However, the most notable aspect of the project was the construction of a mock courtroom. This dedicated space allows students to engage in realistic role-playing scenarios, facilitating their legal education and training. Furthermore, an entire living area was created on the lower level to simulate crime scenes, providing students with a hands-on learning experience in the field of law.
The University of South Carolina office and training facility project showcases KCC's expertise in transforming unique and complex spaces while preserving the timeless architecture of this amazing historic building. Through meticulous planning, skilled craftsmanship, and attention to detail, the old church was successfully repurposed into a functional and immersive learning environment. Completing this project met the university's vision for the Children's Law building and provided students with a realistic and enriching educational experience.
